A survey conducted last year estimated that there are about 8.30 million dogs in Britain. Currently more than half of them, have microchips implanted, which allows them to be electronically identified.

Microchip tagging also means that the dogs can be traced back to their owners, therefore, creating a clear line of accountability of a dog’s actions. Groups including the RSPCA have called for compulsory microchipping to be introduced and it is hoped that such a scheme would encourage more responsible pet ownership.

Ministers have been accused of being slow to reform dangerous dog laws, but Lord Taylor of Holbeach promised an announcement soon.

“We are close to finalising a package of measures to tackle irresponsible dog owners,” he told the House of Lords. “We see microchipping as part of the measures we can do to address an increasing problem.”

“I was not worried when I saw the knife—it is what I am trained to do. I am not brave, I was doing my job.”
